News Update, September 20, 2009

Please note: regular visitors will know that both Phil and Bernice Walker, founders of CAADE, has been beset with overwhelming, challenging health problems for many years. As a result, since the aims of CAADE have now, in the main, largely been met, and especially since the passing of his beloved wife, Bernice, Phil Walker has now retired from active campaigning and CAADE has been wound up as a campaigning organization.

I'm sure many would join me in thanking Phil, honouring the memory of Bernice, and the past CAADE team for their astonishing achievement and contribution to helping bring about laws to ban age discrimination in employment.

Of course, in the area of age discrimination, there is still much to do. But that is a task for others to consider.

Phil has kindly donated both websites and domain names of: www.45-65.com and www.caade.net to Brian Austin (www.InternetTIPS.com) who acted as website advisory to CAADE for many years and who is currently considering plan options for both sites.

For the time being, this website is being maintained as is, though as time will allow, my intention is to remove any links and information that no longer apply. Demands from regular client work however, mean that available time is in short supply. Nevertheless, changes are in the making.

Maintaining a Record of "Something Remarkable!"

For a variety of reasons, this website has been in need of a major revamp for a long time. My medium term goal therefore, is to redesign this website and to essentially record and document what was done by CAADE and to keep CAADE.net as a historical record resource for posterity to judge.

Perhaps when we ask questions like: what is 25+ years of constant work, overwhelming odds, with few funds, and little reward worth, my answer would be - well many things, but at the very least, "something remarkable!"

Yet there were high points too, for example:

With that thought in mind, "footprints in the sand" made by pioneers to show a way or path can all too easily be blown away leaving no trace or memory. Moreover, to avoid "reinventing the wheel", we can all learn from others who have gone before. Everything has value - especially past experience.

Therefore, my goal is that an updated version of this website can remain as a permanent record, a kind of tribute, of that "something remarkable" achieved by two people especially - Phil and Bernice Walker - (and what it cost them, in the opinion of this author), aided by a small band of volunteers, patrons and trustees, during the 25 years prior to 2009.

So, during the coming weeks and months, one of my first tasks is to update this site to remove links that are no longer relevant. Especially remember, no donations are required, so please do not respond to any links asking for donations. Furthermore, please be patient while this task is completed.

In the meantime, while I consider where to go from here, I apologise if some information is now out of date and some links do not appear to work correctly. Therefore, please enjoy the website content that is currently available. Thank you.

Brian Austin, September 20, 2009.

The CAADE Archive

This CAADE Website, coupled with it’s Sister Newsletter - ‘Senior Surfers Online Newsletter - was originally published fortnightly, and had at one time, had over 400 pages of article archives devoted to topics that matter to seniors anywhere. Likewise, at that time, it arguably must surely have offered one of the most comprehensive resources for seniors anywhere.

Whether you have a casual interest in the subject of ‘age discrimination’ or more specifically,  you are suffering personally, or know someone who is, from the effects of age discrimination; this website can hopefully give you some of the answers you have been looking for. On the other hand maybe you are an employer looking to the future of age legislation coming in 2006, or a student grappling with studies on ‘discrimination’; you can certainly find some answers here.

This website describes how CAADE was started by Philip and Bernice Walker in 1988 to fight for legislation to ban all forms of age discrimination. The site also tells you what age discrimination is all about and the implications of its growth and spread throughout the World.

If you were an employer several years ago, you may have been interested in realising CAADE's wide-ranging knowledge on the forthcoming law and how it might have affected you. For employers in particular, CAADE previously set up an AGE AUDITservice to help employers get in line with the new 2006 legislation. Helping you to help your employees through the mysteries of the new pension laws to come in, CAADE previously set up PRE-RETIREMENT PREPARATION COURSES - designed to provide help and guidance.

If you are unemployed and feel the need for extra training to get you out of the rut of long-term unemployment you could have read the following pages of the SPECIAL TRAINING COURSES that had been designed FREE by CAADE and their first choice training partners BUSINESS WISDOM. When it comes to getting jobs CAADE, with its over 15 years of experience had a lot of tricks up its sleeve. Our Nationwide contacts alone give you a big edge.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In our publications we use the word ‘senior’ in a respectful way to describe older people, who might certainly describe themselves as ‘seniors’ in a work-skill or life-skill capacity. They would probably be aged 45 or older, mature and considered by most people to be middle-aged and in their prime.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The website describes the Campaign. You can also learn something about the background behind what age discrimination is about.

With all this information and guidance you could have quickly come to realise that membership of CAADE was both valuable and inexpensive. Years of experience in dealing with problems and helping with new views on ‘what to do next’ all came as a part of the package which includes lists of sympathetic employers, training agencies and ‘specialised’ recruitment agents. You may agree that membership could have paid for itself time and time again when the Campaign was active.

CAADE’s collection of article archives is well respected. All the articles published in the Senior Surfers Online Newsletter since the turn of the Century were previously available. These included some 120 "political comment" articles and a range of subjects from ‘House & Home’ to ‘Computer Tips’. The eighty or so ‘Inspirational features’ are also amongst the most popular to be read and re-read.. Access to all of these was previously FREE to CAADE Members.

Often an article is not enough to satisfy your quest for knowledge, so you could have delved deep inside the Senior Surfers Library and Book Shop, where you could have bought real or eBooks on Senior’s Matters. Buying online was made easy by PayPal- our virtual online merchant banker. Many eBook items could have been downloaded immediately - some were available free of charge. The shopping entrance was of course for members only and gave access to many discounted bargains like our special deals with ‘Amazon’, etc. We called it ‘Virtual Shopping City’ - the difference here being  you never needed to leave your office desk or home!

Finally we will introduced ‘Voluntary Sector Online’ a deviation for the CAADE team but one that proven to be amazingly successful. Bringing the voluntary sector into the twenty-first century is a popular dream. To a great extent, through Voluntary Sector Online’, CAADE started this process at a gallop. Have a look-see at this amazing idea!.

Well how do you find everything?  just proceed through the ‘Page Links’ on the left. You can also use the Search box at the top to access previously unavailable archives - simply enter "archives". You may not be able to get through it all in one or two sessions so why not ‘Bookmark’ it or save it as a ‘Favourite’ and revisit often.

Philip Walker, previous Chairman of the CAADE Centre, now retired.
