With over 45's, like many others, the tendency is not to look at their 'training needs' until the subject 'needs' to be addressed. All too often this is only triggered by the need to acquire a new job.
It is not unusual for a person to retire from 20 years work with the same employer without having had one day's extra training ever. The very concept alone is alien. They have never needed any extra training. An early 'educational' development has delivered them the 'qualifications' needed for their career. However we didn't anticipate a second career. How about a third career? Extra training seemed unnecessary. Now it seems an obvious and critical necessity.
In later life recruitment, one sentence above any other is deemed to 'hurt' most: - "You lack the necessary skills for this job". Wow! And you thought you had learned somethings in life!. That hurtful sentence usually means that you lack 'technological' skills - but not always. Computers are necessary in almost every job done today and 'warehouse' experience is not good enough these days. Like our children it is necessary to be able to manipulate the 'beast'. Fortunately it is nowhere near as difficult as it first seems. Many of my colleagues run 'specialist' training groups and we'd be pleased to help you find the right help for you in that direction, if that is your need. (See below)
When you come out of work, even at your own expense, update your computer knowledge. You must do it to a standard that will be satisfactory to a future employer. It is a lot tougher getting a job at 45 than it was at 25. You can be out of work for a number of years - yes, early effort can pay off!
Trying to get a job within our previous knowledge area is a natural enough thought. However it is invariably a bad move. Think! Why are you out of work? Times change and so must you. The sooner you reach this particular plateau, the better.
There must be many other things you would like to do. This is a time of pressure and grief yes, but it is also a time of great opportunity. Training now comes to the forefront of your mind again. But for what?
Believe it or not, Careers Advice is soon to be available to you - as a Senior. Look for help and guidance from organisations like CAADE and TAEN (Third Age Employment Network). We've been there, crossed the divide. Don't make it a personal battle - you are not on your own out there you know.
Be warned, everyone over the age of 45 is subject to 'age discrimination'. All the skills and experience under the sun can't walk you through the prejudice barrier. It is a fact of life that you are likely to be out of work three times as long as your younger counterparts. Maintain the help you are getting from your newly developed group of 'networkers'. Use your spare time now to cram in all those extra skills that will give YOU the edge when you need it the most!
If you are still out work after six months you will find it worthwhile to ask for a 'special' interview with a Job Centre Plus Specialist. They can tell you about Government backed 'Specialist' help. They can give you some extra tools including money to pay for courses etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So you got a Ph.D when you were in your mid-twenties! What have you done since then? 'Lifelong Learning' is the buzz-phrase these days and for once the Government is right behind this -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
