Training and support groups are everywhere these days. Ten years ago you would be hard put to find one. It is always a good idea to network together in a local group, especially if you have come to be out of work all at the same time.
The new 'network' should naturally extend itself to take account of the 'now' and 'future' needs. The biggest difficulty this type of group can often be its own success. Strange but true! Some - probably the more political members, may prove lucky fairly quickly and the rest find themselves struggling - without natural leaders. Groups need natural leaders.
With the added element of 'Age Discrimination', group longevity is more certain, as it is harder to get work - even for the more persuasive. Disillusionment can come in and the group needs to create a whole new dynamic. It is not always easy!
Where to meet, cost of a telephone, newspapers, stationery etc. etc. means organisation and the dreaded word 'fundraising'. The point was reached some 5 - 6 years ago in the UK where isolated groups began to flourish and from a mere handful we now have literally hundreds of self-help groups - some of them very successful. Many of them run very successful 'Back to Work' training programmes - usually FREE to members.
CAADE has contacts with most of them. We tend to know one another and work with and help one another as the confraternity it is. If therefore you need to be in contact with a group in your area, telephone CAADE on 0845 345 8654 (local rates call) or email us on enquiries@caade.net .
Third Age Employment Network - TAEN
The most successful of the above Groups has proven to be 'Third Age Employment Network' (TAEN) based in the 'Help the Aged' offices in London and core financed by them.
Third Age Employment Network - better known as 'TAEN', has cleverly brought many of the above groups under its own wings - to strengthen them and for them to be able to benefit from collective knowledge.
Patrick Grattan, the founder and Senior Director of TAEN has worked with Philip Walker and CAADE for in excess of ten years and is best known for his campaigning skills in the very heart of Westminster. Patrick has organised TAEN into regions. If you need help in forming or joining a local group therefore you would be wise giving their Regional Representatives a call first.
