Will legislation really ever happen?
Legislation takes a long time to happen. Equal opportunities for women took 25 years. The USA tried 'codes of practice' for many years before bringing in the ADEL in 1967. It has been similarly pursued in the UK. The EU has given the UK until 2006 to comply and install fully comprehensive age legislation. It is our job to make sure it is earlier rather than later and that the law is performed properly.
Will legislation work?
Curiously, legislation is simply a 'decision', a legal piece of paper'. Of itself it has no power. It is how the legislation is used that will tell you if it works or not. Unless we set up 'Commissions' and the like to make the 'rules' work, nothing will. Unless the funding is put in place to enable the rules to be enforced, they won't work. For example, there is adequate ADE legislation in France but is useless because it is simply not enforced.
Why me? Why do I personally suffer from ADE?
You can rest assured that nobody is singling out you personally because of your age. It is the 'myth' of the older worker. 'They're past it, over the hill'. The majority of employers discriminate against everybody over the age of 45. It's not just you! In all there are over two and a half million people suffering from ADE and what is more Government recognises this.
What can I do to help CAADE?
Bring the phenomena to the attention of your friends. Watch out for local companies who blatantly discriminate. Write to them; remind them that there is a Code of Practice already in operation. Write to your local press, contact your local radio. It you need extra support contact CAADE. Go to see your local Member of Parliament, remind him or her that a half of their electorate is over 45. Ask them what they are going to do about it. Go back after a couple of months and ask what they have done. Keep in touch with CAADE, 'Bookmark' our website. Visit it regularly. Subscribe to 'Senior Surfers Online Newsletter' - it will keep you up to date. Above all become a member of CAADE then you can have a personal say!
Why does the Campaign need Donations and Sponsors?
Campaigning is a very expensive business. We are up against a Government with unlimited resources and we have to somehow engage them at every turn. Mailings cost a fortune, computing isn't cheap, telecoms and postage get dearer by the day. Websites with proper hosting and management can cost a lot of money. General expenses are usually whittled to the bone and nobody working for the Campaign gets paid for their work. The workload is tremendous at times. We simply have to be dedicated. However fundraising is very, very hard. Because we are campaigning against government policy, it is difficult to get conventional funding. We really have only two avenues. We can ask YOU the general public to donate funds to us or we can allow others, not necessarily in 'simpatico' to share our public awareness, i.e. Sponsors. Without these funds we will find it increasingly difficult to keep going. However, at the end of the day we would never deal with anyone who we believed not to have same ethics as ourselves and that is fundamental.
But can you get me a job?
At the end of the day, only 'you' can get 'you' a job. However, we have a great deal of experience of the ADE problem and we are pleased that we are able to pass our experience on to you. Recently, Philip Walker published a booklet called 'Surviving age Discrimination in Employment' which is guaranteed to get you a job if you follow it faithfully. It is tough plain talking but if you wish to get around this problem you are going to have to work harder than you have ever worked in your lives. At less than a fiver, the expense is not much of a gamble is it? Order it by emailing CAADE now.
