"An informed society is capable of making its own decisions and more capable of understanding decisions made on its behalf". CAADE aims to inform, tell and teach people what is happening to them, with regards 'age'..
The CAADE Centre Charity was set up in 1992 out of the experiences from the Campaign (founded in 1988). Philip and Bernice found that most of the hundreds of people who were contacting them, were actually really 'suffering' from the effects of age discrimination both physically and emotionally - some to the extreme.
Almost by default they found themselves as 'Counselors' helping people with their knowledge and contacts. In the first five years of its existence The CAADE Centre Charity accumulated over 5000 Case Histories.
Counseling work still goes on today via the telephone, land mail and email. We are able to give a great deal more advice to members these days through the fortnightly online newsletter - 'Senior Surfers Online Newsletter' which is available direct to your desktop.
A limited amount of advice is also given to overseas contacts based on our knowledge of their law base. The CAADE Centre Charity, known all over the world as 'CAADE' (rhymes with 'aid') has contact with hundreds of other groups from throughout the UK and all over the world from Japan to Israel. It is satisfying to know that we have been able to encourage others to fend for themselves.
Employment guidance today is complicated because we are between Codes of Practice and without 'real' law. However if there is an answer we will try to find it. It is interesting that many people presume that because we campaign against age discrimination, that we are somehow 'against' employers and government, Nothing could be further from the truth. Employers seek our help increasingly as the new law approaches, The law will benefit the employer just as much as the employee anyway.
How often are we asked "Can I sue my Employer". People wrongly think that we are fighting Employers and government. In disputes there are often far better ways of solving problems by diplomatic means. CAADE has that experience and can often help employee/employer relationships to a better understanding.
Since 1988 CAADE has been the first choice representative for Seniors in the Media. Hundreds of articles, dozens of regular radio interviews and countless television shows and appearances. CAADE even had a film made about it by the BBC in 1994 - called 'Finished at forty!'.
Age Audits for Employers
Age Discrimination in Employment Law is due in 2006. Law affecting how we treat the 'age' of employees is likely to give considerable concern, as these new laws will affect EVERY employer and employee in the UK.
The new law will affect recruitment, training, promotion and retirement and many other areas in between. No longer will we be able to take into account a person's age when dealing with their employment, even in retirement it will be illegal to consider 'age' as a reason for dismissal!
It was CAADE who outlined the potential legislation as long ago as 1994. CAADE works very closely with Ministers and Standing Committees in the framing of the laws we will encounter in 2006. Who better then to advise of the likely outcomes to the employer.
CAADE is working closely with 'Business Wisdom', their choice Commercial Provider, to bring programmes of 'Age Audit' to Employers now and in the coming months, that all may be aware and ready for these powerful changes. The managing Director of Business Wisdom, Stephen Leggett, is highly experienced in managing this area of 'management change'. The added fact that he is also a member of the CAADE Centre Charity Management Team, makes CAADE/BUSINESS WISDOM the perfect Partnership Consultancy to help prepare companies for the very important (and unavoidable) changes ahead. Email - age.audits@caade.net - for immediate advice today!
Business Wisdom will take you through a programme to advise your Line Management team and outline to your Personnel Function probable change areas, to be able to comply with the forthcoming law. They will then set up a programme to help you keep abreast of the legislative changes.
There are as many people over the age of 45 in the workforce now as those under, so to get anywhere near equality capability, some industries will have to make radical changes. We are here to make that easier for you.
Pre-Retirement Pension Preparation
The CAADE/BUSINESS WISDOM team, together with other bought-in 'specialists' also deliver programmes of Pre-retirement Pension Preparation for your employees. With the new Pension changes coming in, employees will need to be fully aware of their pension provision and need to service and prepare their Pension requirements well in advance of retirement. We, and the government, will recommend constant personal and corporate review after the age of 45.
In ten years time it will be very difficult to survive on a government basic pension alone. A four step recommendation is expected from government in 2004. This will involve all four parties - the government, employers, IFA's and employees. Make sure you are up to date through CAADE.
CAADE and BUSINESS WISDOM have other schemes with which they are working hand in glove with the government's Employment Services in providing coaching and training for those working under the 'New Deal 50+'
